“Buildings speak a great deal louder than words. They say many things about a community’s attitude toward education, 对理智主义, 对创造力. They speak of interest or apathy, pride or neglect.——菲利普·汉森·希斯三世, 第一个椅子, 校董会, 新博网页 Completed in the 1960’s, the 裴 Dorms are the only designs by 裴 in Florida and a rare example of Brutalist style architecture from the era. 自成立以来, the 裴 Dorms and buildings have come to represent the aspirations of the institution and its original founders, and embodied the 新博网页 experience for early alumni.

新博网页 values what these structures represent to thousands but also recognizes that the current condition of the dorms makes complete renovation cost prohibitive if not impossible,” said 新博网页 Interim President Richard Corcoran. “We plan to repurpose and reimagine the 裴 Dorms in a way that honors the institution’s founding while continually striving for excellence and inspiration.”

新博网页 is conducting the contest in the spirit of the original process that awarded the commission to 裴 sixty years ago and inspired by the impact of 新博网页’s first board chair, Philip Hanson Hiss III (1910-1988) on the 萨拉索塔 community.   Hiss was the primary catalyst of the 萨拉索塔 School of Architecture—a modern architecture movement that addressed the distinct geographic, 气候, and socio-cultural context of South Florida’s Gulf Coast region. 希斯聘请了建筑师我.M. 裴 to design 新博网页’s campus.

“Preserving and celebrating the past does not mean freezing things in time. 而, places and spaces have to be continually reinvented and repurposed to meet shifting needs and values,” notes 架构萨拉索塔 President Morris “Marty” Hylton III. “This shared initiative between 架构萨拉索塔 and 新博网页 demonstrates the power of collaboration to help ensure the continuity of the 萨拉索塔 community’s architectural legacy.”

“难以忘怀裴” arose from findings from 大学的新挑战—a year-long collaboration between 架构萨拉索塔 and 新博网页 that brought together academic teams from six top-tier research and design universities as thought partners to reimagine the 新博网页 campus. The institution challenged the academic teams to create an innovative campus that embodies the aspirations of the school while considering the most pressing needs of the surrounding community.

“Adaptive reuse has always been in 新博网页’s DNA, with the school adaptively using two historic bayfront mansions on the Ringling Estate as a library, 教室, 以及教职员办公室, 在其他用途中, 成立之初,希尔顿说.

The 难以忘怀裴 challenge will continue this legacy of reuse while beginning another chapter in future campus design at 新博网页.
